Product Recall

Pilchard Product Recall:

Over 95% of Affected Stock Already Isolated

West Point Processing (PTY) Ltd, the factory that produces the brand Saldanha Pilchards, amongst others, is conducting a precautionary recall of its 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce and 400g Pilchards in Chilli Sauce. Only products with the batch codes ZST2 9 and ZSC2 9 are affected. All other canned pilchard products on shelf produced by West Point Processing, such as Saldanha Pilchards, remain safe to eat.

The recall is as a result of a possible canning defect that happened during the sauce-filling process on only one canning line, causing a small scratch on the metal of some cans. This may have compromised the integrity of the cans that were packaged on that line.

The problem was immediately investigated once we became aware of it. The bulk of the stock that is potentially impacted has already been isolated or removed from distribution centres and retail outlets across the country (approximately 96%).

The recall is a precautionary safety measure and no health-related issues have been reported either before or after the announcement was made. However, we take customer safety extremely seriously and ask all consumers who are in possession of a can with one of these batch codes from any of the below brands to return it to the retailer from where it was bought for a full cash refund, or for another, unaffected pilchard product produced by West Point Processing. The brands that the recall apply to, are:

  • Deep catch
  • Mammas
  • OK Housebrand
  • Prime Ocean
  • Spar
  • Sunny
  • Shoprite Ritebrand
  • Cape Point
  • Checkers Housebrand
  • U Brand
  • Saldanha
  • West Point

FAQs

Are all Saldanha canned products part of the recall?

No. The recall only applies to the 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce and 400g Pilchards in Chilli Sauce with the batch codes ZST2 9 and ZSC2 9. All other Saldanha canned pilchard products on shelf remain safe to eat.

What must I do if I have one of these cans in my possession?

Please return it to the retailer from where it was bought for a full cash refund or another, unaffected pilchard product produced by West Point Processing. No till slip is required. If it has already been opened, please retain the can and the product and contact us on Jason Banger on jason@saldanha.co.za or 021 930 9695. We will collect it and investigate further.

What is wrong with the product?

The sauce-filler may have caused the canning defect on one of West Point Processing’s canning lines, causing a small scratch on the metal of the cans. This may have compromised the integrity of the cans that were packaged on that line. The recall is a precautionary safety measure and no health-related issues have been reported either before or after the announcement was made.

What is the risk of consuming an affected product and what must I do if I have eaten an affected product?

The products may pose a health risk if consumed. Consumers may or may not experience adverse side effects. However, we take the wellbeing of consumers extremely seriously and recommend that if you have eaten an affected product and experience an adverse reaction, to consult with a qualified, medical doctor. Please also retain the can and the product and contact us on jason@saldanha.co.za or 021 930 9695. We will collect the can from you and investigate further.

Are any other brands affected by the recall?

Yes. West Point Processing (PTY) Ltd experienced a canning defect during the sauce-filling process on only one of its lines. This canning line services several brands sold to wholesalers, retailers and informal traders. The recall is therefore applicable to the 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce and 400g Pilchards in Chilli Sauce with the batch codes ZST2 9 and ZSC2 9 for the following brands:

  • Deep catch
  • Mammas
  • OK Housebrand
  • Prime Ocean
  • Spar
  • Sunny
  • Shoprite Ritebrand
  • Cape Point
  • Checkers Housebrand
  • U Brand
  • Saldanha
  • West Point

All consumers in possession of a can with either of these batch codes from any of the above-mentioned brands must please return it to the retailer from where it was bought for a full cash refund or another, unaffected pilchard product produced by West Point Processing.

Will there be a shortage of my favourite Saldanha Pilchards because of the recall?

There will be a limited impact on stock levels of Saldanha pilchards not affected by the recall for the next few weeks. Because the recall is limited to the 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce and 400g Pilchards in Chilli Sauce with the batch codes ZST2 9 and ZSC2 9, all other canned pilchard products produced by West Point Processing (such as Saldanha) on shelf remain safe to eat. We are also putting improved safety protocols in place to ensure that this incident remains isolated.

What are you doing to make sure that this does not happen in the future?

We have temporarily shut down the affected canning line while working with various regulators to establish the root cause of the problem and ensure improved safety protocols are in place to prevent this from recurring.
